"

Contact without communion. This sums up the whole situation. I am 60 and love thinking back on my life before the internet… such a different time, when I loved making phone calls, planning trips to see friends and family that you hadn’t connected with for a long while.. the distance and lack of rapid communication options back then really made you look forward too and appreciate it more when you DID finally commune with each other in person.

Thank you for bringing both light and deep thought to this topic. I’m not against technology as I’m very glad we have this tool available to read your writings! But we must have the discipline and courage to use it wisely!"

"I know instantly when I walk into a room if I like it or not. Rooms speak to me. Everything IN the room has a voice. I am a minimalist and enjoy a structured, practical clean and comfortable environment. I am also very affected by colour. Certain colour palettes can make my heart sing or make me feel uncomfortable, uneasy or sad and depressed. One of the most important things that also impacts me is lighting. Considering how lighting affects the room both day and night and how it works with the colour palette is critical for creating mood and energy and pleasing atmosphere.

I loved this article, it really made me think, and I will definitely save and reread it for future reference. Thank you!

The soul in spare and what remains

Thank you for this excellent essay! I am a passionate advocate of all things minimalist.

I find the more I focus on simplicity in my life the easier it becomes to see areas where cutting something back or out entirely would be wise and why. Now, after 10 years of living my minimalist lifestyle, if something in my life isn’t working well or complicating and slowing a process down, or just adding unnecessary work or stress, I make swift changes. I have developed the insight to “see” a problem and the skills and confidence to solve the issue using my minimalist toolbox. I am a junior school teacher and find myself constantly applying minimalist methods when teaching important concepts to my students. Students these days have so much trouble focusing for more than 5 minutes, so when I DO capture their full attention I have to make sure what I’m teaching counts! Applying this strategy in all areas gets things done, effectively, efficiently and successfully. Minimalism is a winning formula for success in ALL areas of life!

What an exceptional, beautiful and informative article this is! Thank you! I loved reading how other parts of the world experience minimalism.

The topic is one I’m deeply connected too. As the notification for this new post came up on my phone, I was actually reading on my Kindle “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau. It’s my first time reading it, and I’m absolutely loving every single word! Ive spent years reading multiple books and articles on minimalism and as I read through Henry’s book it’s clear that he was one of the original writers on this topic that other modern writers frequently quote or translate. To hear him speak so eloquently and passionately about trying to live a simple life back in 1847 is amazing. It’s Amazing that he writes about the exact same problems we still have these days of over consumption and people not truly living a free life, trapped by their possessions and quest for more.

For me, striving to live a minimalist lifestyle in this crazy world, is a constant process of push and pull, pressure and release, picking up and putting down. It’s a daily battle to sail above the draw and temptation of the consumer driven world. It can be lonely, going against the norm, but I am winning the battle with focus and determination because the view from the other side is beautiful and peaceful.
